The Autobahn: Where a Supercar Shows What It Was Built For

Roughly 70 percent of the German Autobahn network has no general speed limit. The remaining sections carry posted limits – near cities, at junctions, in roadworks and on stretches with variable signs – and those limits are enforced by cameras. The recommended speed is 130 km/h; above it you are legal, but you carry more responsibility if something goes wrong. Three rules make a fast drive safe and relaxed: keep right whenever the lane is free, only overtake on the left, and check your mirrors far earlier than you would at home – closing speeds of 100 km/h between lanes are normal.

In heavy traffic, German drivers form an emergency corridor between the left lane and the lane next to it as soon as traffic slows; keep to your side and leave the gap open. Rain, spray and crosswinds change everything above 200 km/h – on a wet day the recommended speed is a good maximum. Your rental includes the mileage shown in the booking process, and additional kilometer packages can be added for longer runs. Fuel is not included; you return the car with the same level you received it.

Which Car for the Autobahn?

For pure speed, the mid-engine cars are the obvious choice: the Ferrari 488 GTB with 670 hp and the Lamborghini Huracán EVO with its 640-hp V10 both pass 300 km/h and stay planted doing it. The Porsche 911 GT3 is the driver's pick – a naturally aspirated flat-six, manual-like precision and the composure to run all day. The Audi R8 V10 performance adds quattro all-wheel drive, which makes it the most forgiving of the four when the weather turns.

If you are travelling with passengers or luggage, the Lamborghini Urus and the Mercedes-AMG G63 combine 650 and 585 hp with four seats and real trunk space – both cruise at 200 km/h as calmly as a sedan and turn a road trip to Salzburg or Lake Garda into part of the holiday.

Autobahn Rental for International Visitors

Most Autobahn rentals we arrange are for visitors from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the Gulf states. A valid driver's license from these countries is accepted together with your passport; for licenses issued outside the EU we recommend an International Driving Permit as a translation. You must have held your license for at least three years, and the minimum age is 23 – 21 for the Mercedes-AMG G63.

Every car is insured with an excess; the security deposit equals that excess, is blocked on a credit card and is shown in the booking process before you confirm. The rental contract is in English, and our team is available in English by phone, email and WhatsApp throughout the rental.

Driving into Austria, Switzerland or Italy is possible by prior agreement – tell us your route and we take care of the paperwork. Austrian and Swiss motorways require a vignette, Italian motorways charge tolls; both are easy to handle and we explain them at the handover. Rates, Mileage and Booking

Three rental options cover almost every Autobahn plan: the five-hour Drive from Monday to Thursday for a single run north on the A9 and back; the day rental for a full loop through the Alps; and the 72-hour weekend rental, ideally Friday to Monday, for a road trip to Salzburg, Lake Garda or the Großglockner. Each option includes insurance, a personal introduction and a mileage allowance, with kilometer packages available for longer routes.
